Allround Starter/Refresher

For novice veterinarians or veterinarians who need a thorough refresher course

General information about the starter or refresher learning path

The OVT Starter/Refresher Trajectory is a comprehensive learning pathway that combines independent online study with live online sessions. Designed to provide a solid foundation of all-round knowledge, this 1-year program is ideal for newly graduated veterinarians seeking a strong start, as well as experienced professionals in need of an in-depth refresher. It is also an excellent choice for veterinarians transitioning from other specialties to companion animal care.

This program is suitable for both new veterinarians who need a solid foundation and more experienced veterinarians who require a thorough refresher. It is also ideal for veterinarians who have completed their degrees in a field other than companion animals and wish to transition to companion animal medicine.

An added benefit—and perhaps the greatest value—is the close-knit learning community. During the program, all participants participate in a private WhatsApp group* where, under the guidance of several instructors, they can discuss cases and answer questions. This direct line to colleagues and specialists not only offers quick feedback but also provides a much-needed support network for veterinarians who often work alone in their daily practice.

*The WhatsApp group is only for participants completing the program with face-to-face sessions.

The modules offer a variety of online webinars, articles, assessments, podcasts, and interesting documents. This keeps it fun and varied! You’ll conclude each module with an assessment.

If you choose to complete the course with face-to-face sessions, it will run from June 2026 to June 2027. If you choose to complete it independently (without face-to-face sessions), you can start immediately after registering.

You should expect the entire course to take approximately 80 hours (an average of 7 to 12 hours per module). It would be a shame if you weren’t able to complete the entire course, so we recommend only registering if you can spare the time.

Many modules offer the option of taking additional lessons.

A minimum of 15 participants is required for the course to run. We keep the group size small, with a maximum of 24 participants.

The program begins in June 2026 and runs until June 2027.

If you decide you want to complete the program WITHOUT the in-person contact, this is also possible. In this case, you can start at any time, but you will complete the program completely independently without group support.

Clinical Pathology I

A general blood test and urine test are tests we perform daily in our practice. They can therefore provide us with a great deal of useful information. Using clinical cases, we will systematically review the information you can obtain from a blood test. This module covers the following:

Hematology:

  • How do you classify anemia?
  • How can blood parameters help you determine the cause of anemia?
  • What are possible causes of erythrocytosis?
  • What are possible causes of abnormalities in leukocytes and platelets?

Blood smear:

  • How do you systematically examine a smear?
  • What information can you obtain from the smear?

Biochemistry: with a detailed discussion of:

  • Kidney values
  • Liver values and liver function tests
  • Glucose
  • Proteins and electrophoresis
  • Cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Lipase, amylase
  • Creatinine kinase
Instructors: Geert Paes, DVM, Dip ECVIM-ca
Estimated duration: About 6 hours
