Radiology Quiz September 2025

In collaboration with Dr. Adrien-Maxence Hespel from the University of Tennessee, we present the following radiology quiz. The goal of this case is to practice identifying radiographic findings and formulating a radiographic diagnosis based on a brief patient description. The final section provides additional information about the treatment.

Description of the RX images

Orthogonalβ€―radiographs of theβ€―abdomenβ€―are available for interpretation.

Abdominal serosal detail isβ€―normal. Theβ€―liverβ€―isβ€―smallβ€―which results inβ€―cranialβ€―deviationβ€―of the gastric axis. Otherwise, theβ€―gastrointestinal tract,β€―spleen, kidneys andβ€―urinary bladderβ€―remainβ€―normal. The included portions of theβ€―thoraxβ€―remainβ€―normal.

The size of theβ€―liverβ€―likely represents aβ€―normalβ€―patientβ€―variant, however, an underlyingβ€―chronicβ€―hepatopathy cannot be entirely excluded. A cause for theβ€―patient’sβ€―reportedβ€―hematochezia is not identified on the current radiographic study.

Theβ€―patientβ€―had an abdominalβ€―ultrasoundβ€―that was mostlyβ€―unremarkable.

This case illustrates a mostlyβ€―normalβ€―abdomen. It is easy to over interpret radiographs. The case had a subsequent medicine workup.
