Clinical Pathology Training Program

Interpret lab results with more confidence

Do you want to feel more confident when interpreting blood results, urine findings, and cytology samples in your daily practice? Do you sometimes look at laboratory results and wonder what they really mean for the patient in front of you? And would you like a more structured, practical approach to deciding what your next diagnostic or therapeutic step should be?

If so, this training program is designed for you.

Clinical pathology plays a crucial role in first-line veterinary practice. Blood tests, urine analysis, coagulation profiles, and cytology samples often provide essential information, but interpreting these results correctly can be challenging. This program is specifically developed for veterinarians who want to feel more confident, efficient, and clinically grounded when working with laboratory results.

The goal of this training program is not to make clinical pathology theoretical or unnecessarily complicated. Instead, the focus is on helping you understand what laboratory findings mean in real patients, how to recognize clinically relevant patterns, and how to use these results to make better decisions in practice.

Throughout the program, you will learn how to approach common and important clinical pathology questions in a structured and practical way. We focus on the types of cases you encounter in daily practice, using clinically relevant examples and case-based learning to help you translate laboratory findings into clear clinical reasoning.

Within this program, the following key topics are covered: the work-up of patients with anemia, practical interpretation of biochemistry results, the work-up of patients with coagulation disorders, and cytology that you can perform and interpret in practice.

This training program becomes available on 1 January 2027 and can be started at any time after that date. It is fully online and self-paced, with access running over a four-month period, allowing you to complete the program according to your own schedule. The training is designed to be practical, clinically relevant, and immediately applicable to your daily work as a veterinarian.

The program includes a minimum of 12 hours of webinars, combined with clinical cases that you can work through independently and additional learning materials to help you apply what you learn. The case-based format encourages you to actively interpret results, think through differential diagnoses, and decide on appropriate next steps before reviewing the explanations and key take-home messages.

By the end of this training program, you will have a stronger and more practical foundation in clinical pathology. You will be better equipped to interpret blood and urine results, approach cytology samples with more confidence, and use laboratory findings as an essential part of your clinical decision-making.

This training program is designed for veterinarians working in first-line practice or in a hospital setting who regularly interpret blood results, urine findings, coagulation profiles, or cytology samples, and who want to approach these results with greater confidence and structure.

It is ideal for veterinarians who want to better understand what laboratory findings mean in the context of real patients, and who are looking for a practical, clinically relevant framework to guide their diagnostic reasoning and next steps.

Whether you are early in your career or already experienced but looking to strengthen your foundation, this training program will support you in building a solid and practical understanding of clinical pathology. Core principles are thoroughly covered, while the focus remains firmly on application in daily practice.

This online training program offers a practical and structured approach to clinical pathology, focused on the types of laboratory results and cytology samples you encounter in daily veterinary practice. The goal is to help you interpret findings with greater confidence, understand their clinical relevance, and decide on the most appropriate next steps for your patient.

Within this program, the following core areas are covered: the work-up of patients with anemia, practical interpretation of biochemistry results, the work-up of patients with coagulation disorders, and cytology that you can perform and interpret in practice.

The training program starts on 1 January 2027 and runs over a period of 4 months. It is fully self-paced and entirely online, allowing you to learn at your own pace and according to your own schedule. Despite the online format, the program is designed to feel practical, engaging, and clinically relevant through a combination of different learning methods.

You will learn through a combination of:

  • Short, focused webinar-based lectures covering essential theory
  • Clinical cases that you work through independently to apply your knowledge
  • In-depth video discussions explaining the clinical reasoning behind each case
  • Practical learning materials to help you translate what you learn into daily practice
  • Self-assessment quizzes to test and reinforce your understanding

The training program includes a minimum of 12 hours of webinar-based teaching and is RACE-approved. In addition to the webinar content, you will work through clinical cases and supporting learning materials that help you apply the theory to real-life clinical situations.

This case-based and varied learning format ensures that the content remains hands-on, clinically relevant, and directly applicable. By the end of the program, you will have a more structured approach to interpreting blood results, urine findings, coagulation profiles, and cytology samples, helping you make better-informed clinical decisions in practice.

This training program is designed to give you more than just theoretical knowledge. It aims to help you build a practical and structured approach to clinical pathology, so you can interpret laboratory results and cytology samples with greater confidence in your daily clinical work.

By combining focused teaching with case-based learning, you will learn how to translate blood results, urine findings, coagulation profiles, and cytology samples into meaningful clinical information. You will develop a clearer understanding of what the results mean for the patient in front of you, what patterns to recognize, and which next steps are most appropriate.

Beyond the clinical benefits, the program is also RACE-approved, ensuring that your learning is formally recognized as continuing education.

However, the most valuable outcome of this training program is the confidence and clarity you will gain when working with laboratory results. You will finish the program feeling more structured in your interpretation, more confident in your clinical reasoning, and better equipped to use clinical pathology as a practical tool in your decision-making.

Practical Interpretation of Hematology Results

Hematology results are part of our daily routine in practice and can provide a wealth of valuable information. In this module, we focus on how to interpret these results in a practical and structured way, starting with the work-up of patients with anemia.

You will learn how to classify anemia, how hematological parameters can help you determine the underlying cause, and how to decide on the most appropriate next steps. We will then continue with the approach to patients with thrombocytopenia and discuss other important hematological abnormalities, including changes in leukocytes, erythrocytes, and platelets.

Blood smear evaluation will also be covered in detail. You will learn how to systematically examine a smear, what information you can obtain from it, and how smear findings can help you interpret hematology results more accurately.

This module covers the following:

Hematology:

  • How do you classify anemia?
  • How can blood parameters help you determine the cause of anemia?
  • What are possible causes of erythrocytosis?
  • What are possible causes of abnormalities in leukocytes and platelets?

Blood smear:

  • How do you systematically examine a smear?
  • What information can you obtain from the smear?

Clinical cases will be used throughout the module to help you apply the information in a practical and systematic way.

This module covers the following:
