Clinical Signs, Diagnosis and Pitfalls

This webinar provides a comprehensive overview of canine hypothyroidism, one of the most common endocrine disorders in dogs. The session begins with a review of thyroid physiology and the pathophysiological mechanisms that lead to thyroid hormone deficiency. Different forms of hypothyroidism are discussed, including primary hypothyroidism caused by lymphocytic thyroiditis or thyroid atrophy, as well as less common secondary, tertiary, and congenital forms.

Participants will learn how to recognize the wide spectrum of clinical manifestations associated with hypothyroidism, including dermatological, metabolic, neurological, cardiovascular, ocular, and reproductive abnormalities. Particular attention is given to the often subtle and nonspecific nature of the clinical signs, which can make diagnosis challenging in clinical practice.

The webinar also focuses on the diagnostic approach to suspected hypothyroidism, highlighting the interpretation of thyroid hormone testing and common diagnostic pitfalls that may lead to overdiagnosis or inappropriate levothyroxine treatment. By combining clinical examples with a structured diagnostic framework, this session helps veterinarians make more accurate decisions when evaluating dogs with suspected thyroid disease.
