Internal Medicine I

Endocrine, Gastro-Intestinal, Uro-nephrology and Hematology

Building confidence in everyday internal medicine cases

Do you enjoy tackling complex cases and getting to the bottom of what’s really going on? Do you thrive on patients where the diagnosis isn’t immediately obvious and clinical reasoning truly matters? And do chronic gastrointestinal, urinary, hematologic, or endocrine cases spark your interest?

If so, you’re not alone! These types of cases make up a large proportion of what we see in first-line practice. This program is specifically designed for veterinarians who want to feel confident and well-equipped when approaching internal medicine cases, and who are looking to build a solid, practical foundation that they can apply directly in their daily work.

Over the course of one year, you will be immersed in the fascinating world of internal medicine, with a strong focus on the types of cases you encounter in daily practice. Through clinically relevant scenarios and grounded in the latest literature, this program provides practical tools to help you approach cases in a structured and confident way.

Within this program, the following key disciplines of internal medicine are covered: endocrinology, gastroenterology, uro-nephrology, hematology and cytology, and hepatology/pancreatic disease.

This program is fully self-paced and entirely online, allowing you to complete it at your own pace and according to your own schedule. Despite this independent format, the learning experience is designed to feel highly engaging and interactive. Short, focused video lectures are alternated with a variety of learning materials, including protocols, step-by-step plans, recommended reading, and self-assessment quizzes.

The program consists of 6 modules and includes at least 50 hours of educational content, primarily delivered through online webinars. The modules are released sequentially, and you will have two months to complete each module before progressing to the next. Each module features clinical cases that you will work through independently, followed by in-depth video discussions highlighting the clinical reasoning and key take-home messages. This case-based approach ensures that the content remains practical, relevant, and directly applicable to your daily work. Please note that the 50 hours refers to the webinar content alone. To complete the full program, including learning materials, clinical cases, and quizzes, you should expect to spend approximately 10–12 hours per module. This ensures a thorough and comprehensive learning experience.

For veterinarians with a particular interest in other areas of internal medicine, we also offer a complementary program: Internal Medicine II, focusing on infectious diseases, respiratory medicine, immune-mediated disorders, and emergency and critical care. Both programs cover entirely different topics and can be followed independently or alongside each other. Participants who enroll in both programs receive a 10% discount on each trajectory.

This program is designed for veterinarians working in first-line practice or in a hospital setting who regularly encounter internal medicine cases and want to approach them with greater confidence and structure. It is ideal for those who enjoy clinical reasoning, especially in cases where the diagnosis is not immediately clear and a systematic approach is essential.

Whether you are early in your career or already experienced but looking to strengthen your foundation, this trajectory will support you in building a solid, practical understanding of internal medicine. Core principles are thoroughly covered, while at the same time the program is continuously aligned with the latest literature and current insights. This makes it equally valuable for veterinarians who already have a good foundation but want to ensure they are fully up to date with the most recent developments in the field.

This one-year program offers a comprehensive and structured approach to small animal internal medicine, focused on the types of cases you encounter in daily practice. Within this program, the following core areas of internal medicine are covered: endocrinology, gastroenterology, uro-nephrology, hematology and cytology, and hepatology/pancreatic disease.

The program is fully self-paced and entirely online, allowing you to learn at your own pace and according to your own schedule. Despite the online format, the course is specifically designed to feel highly engaging and interactive, through a continuous alternation of different learning methods.

You will learn through a combination of:

  • Short, focused webinar-based lectures covering essential theory
  • Clinical cases that you work through independently to apply your knowledge
  • In-depth video discussions explaining the clinical reasoning behind each case
  • Practical learning materials, including protocols, step-by-step plans, and recommended articles
  • Self-assessment quizzes to test and reinforce your understanding

The program consists of 6 modules and includes at least 50 hours of educational content. Modules are released sequentially, and you will have two months to complete each module, allowing ample time to integrate the material into your daily practice. Please note that the 50 hours refers to the webinar content alone. To complete the full program, including learning materials, clinical cases, and quizzes, you should expect to spend approximately 10–12 hours per module. This ensures a thorough and comprehensive learning experience.

This case-based and varied learning format ensures that the content remains practical, clinically relevant, and directly applicable, while keeping the learning experience dynamic and engaging throughout the entire program.

This trajectory is designed to give you more than just knowledge. It aims to build a solid foundation in internal medicine and the confidence to apply it in your daily clinical work. By combining theory with case-based learning, you will develop a structured approach to even the most complex cases, allowing you to make well-reasoned decisions with greater certainty.

Beyond the clinical benefits, the program is also accredited by RACE for 50 continuing education credits, ensuring that your learning is formally recognized.

However, the most valuable outcome of this trajectory is the confidence and clarity you will gain when approaching internal medicine cases. You will finish the program feeling better equipped, more structured in your thinking, and more confident in your clinical decision-making.

Registrations are now open, and an early bird discount is available for early registrations:

  • 7.5% discount for registrations before July 31
  • 5% discount for registrations before September 30

The program officially starts on November 15 and runs over a period of one year.

Participants who register before November 15 will gain access to the program on the official start date (November 15), after which they will have one year to complete the trajectory.

After November 15, it remains possible to enroll at any time. From that moment on, you can start immediately upon registration, and your one-year access period will begin from your personal start date.

For example:

  • If you register in August, you will start on November 15 and have access until November 15 the following year.
  • If you register in December, you can start immediately and will have access until December the following year.

Clinical Pathology and Cytology

A complete blood work-up and urinalysis are tests we perform on a daily basis in practice. They can provide a wealth of valuable information. In this module, we will use clinical cases to systematically explore how to interpret these tests and what information they can offer.

The following topics are covered:

Hematology

  • How do you classify anemia?
  • How can blood parameters help you determine the underlying cause of anemia?
  • What are the possible causes of erythrocytosis?
  • What are the possible causes of abnormalities in leukocytes and thrombocytes?

Blood smear

  • How do you systematically evaluate a blood smear?
  • What information can you obtain from it?

Clinical biochemistry, with an in-depth discussion of:

  • Renal parameters
  • Liver enzymes and liver function tests
  • Glucose
  • Proteins and electrophoresis
  • Cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Lipase and amylase
  • Creatine kinase

Coagulation disorders
Including an overview of the physiology of the coagulation system, available coagulation tests, and how to distinguish between primary and secondary hemostatic disorders based on both diagnostic testing and clinical presentation.

In addition, this module places a strong focus on cytology, providing you with the tools to independently evaluate cytological samples. Using images of cytology preparations, we will discuss how to recognize different types of abnormalities (inflammation versus neoplasia) and how to distinguish between them. We will also explore how to differentiate benign from malignant processes.

Furthermore, we will cover a structured approach to patients with effusions (thoracic or abdominal), using cytology in combination with additional diagnostic tests to guide your work-up.

The module consists of a varied learning format, combining engaging reading materials and practical documents (such as step-by-step approaches and protocols) with online webinars. Multiple clinical cases are discussed throughout the module, and you will also have the opportunity to work through two clinical cases independently online.

At the end of the module, there is a knowledge assessment. This is also a learning opportunity, as detailed explanations are provided for each answer, clarifying why a particular option is correct or incorrect.
