This webinar provides a comprehensive, clinically relevant overview of intestinal surgery in small animal patients, with a focus on what is currently considered best practice, what innovations are emerging, and which older
techniques should be avoided.

It begins with essential anatomical and physiological principles, emphasizing key surgical concepts such as the importance of the submucosa as the intestinal holding layer and proper assessment of intestinal viability.
The webinar then guides the audience through practical surgical techniques, including enterotomy, enterectomy, and anastomosis, highlighting critical steps such as atraumatic tissue handling, appropriate suture selection, and the necessity of leak testing. Evidence-based recommendations are provided to help surgeons avoid common pitfalls, such as the use of inverting or two-layer closure techniques.
In addition, the presentation explores modern developments in gastrointestinal surgery, including the use of barbed sutures, skin staples, and surgical staplers, discussing their advantages, limitations, and safety profiles.
Finally, it addresses postoperative complications such as septic peritonitis, ileus, and short bowel syndrome, offering guidance on prevention and management.

Overall, the webinar aims to enhance surgical decision-making and improve patient outcomes in small animal intestinal surgery.
